En las entranyas de Los Angeles..(pasan cosas extrañas) Summer Edition

En la ciudad querubín siempre pasan cosas extrañas y entrañables, pero en el verano estos happenings se multiplican así que en mi rol de promotor cultural angelino les paso un pequeña lista de las cosas que me intrigan y en las que yo estaré. Les actualizo que regreso a nerdlandia de medio tiempo para ver si ya termino la maestria en el otoño. Pero este verano estoy involucrado en los eventos de Descarga en Citywalk como co-booker/production/stage manager y en su segunda edición hay muchas noches muy sabrosas, a título personal me sorprendió Akwid (que siempre me han gustado y ¿qué?) quienes se presentaron en la primera fecha. Y les recomiendo a La Potranquita, la hipster darling de María Daniela y la noche final con Crooked Stilo, Frankie J y los nuevos RDB: Kudai, ¡Yes!

Pues ya esta, pasen y vean.... y si tienen recomendaciones, invitaciones o relevaciones ¡compartan!

There are always things happening in the cherub city, but this time of year those happenings multiply, so in my role as a cultural promoter I have compiled a small list of events that intrigue me and that I plan attend. Now my update: I plan to do a part-time return to nerdlandia in an attempt to advance in my M.A. But this summer I continue my involvement with the Descarga events at Citywalk as co-booker/production/stage manager. In the second edition of this concert series, I got to say there are some very cool nights; I was pleasantly surprised by Akwid, who performed on the opening night (yes, I have always liked ‘em, so what?) For the upcoming Descarga nights, I recommend La Potranquita, La Sonora Show and their cumbia (can’t go wrong with them really) the hipster darling of María Daniela and the closing night with Crooked Stilo, Frankie J and the new RDB: Kudai, ¡yep, yep)

Phantom Sightings: Art after the Chicano Movement @ LACMA (Visiones fantasmagóricas: arte inspirado en el movimiento chicano)

“One of the key ingredients to be successful as a Chicano…is to make sure you never call yourself one.” -Harry Gamboa Jr.

First, let's consider the assertion made by Harry to consider my cultural identity label:
I have never called myself a Chicano and I have refused to be labeled as a Chicano...so that means I'm a successful Chicano. Ok, fine with me. There, it's settled now.
If you need more proof, here: one of my most prized Art co-possessions; it's the framed poster of Los Four landmark exhibit at LACMA in 1974। Which is quite a rarity that was found in a dusty bin at a thrifty art shop in Pasadena and I can't forget to mention the box set of Los Lobos' "El cancionero, más y más"

With that said, Chicano Art in its different forms has been a fascination and enigma for me since I was a child, but enough about me.... tell me what do you think about me? ;)
So today (4/2/008), I wandered off my usual gig as an educator at LACMA (one of my multiple jobs, but don't worry you don't have to keep count) to check out the press preview of LACMA's new exhibit "Phantom Sightings: Art after the Chicano Movement" and I was truly enthralled and surprised by the art pieces and their conceptual quest, if you think that Chicano art is a bunch of posters written in Spanglish with the UFW eagle and some pictures focusing on some menacing cholos you will be surprised that post-Chicano artists are much more sophisticated than that. The conceptual engagement to their pieces is simply astonishing, refreshing, impressive, serious, contemporary, daring, thought provoking and yes with a good dose of sarcasm and humor, we can’t ever forget to find humor even when conditions are dire!
While their works are rooted in their experiences as Mexican-Americans/ Chicanos/Latinos this is not nor their emphasis or their limitation. Yes, this fact is as embedded in their existence and their works without necessarily being the essential element of their work. Moreover, the pieces included in this exhibit are threaded by their urban origin, which is so obvious, yet so necessary to hammer on the imaginary of both the American and the Mexican societies: that the Mexican Diaspora is an integral part of the American metropolises.
Ok, that sounds kind of highfalutin and I wrote it on purpose, since I don't want to spoil anybody's visit to the exhibit by detailing any of the works being exhibited at LACMA. Just think about the big concept: cultural identify and the personal expression of the cultural identity in the urban life? What does it mean to be part of the Mexican Diaspora? How do I express it on an everyday context? How do I express my cultural identity in an abstract form?
Also something that I found very useful is the library of books that are offered to the visitors to be read, the artists selected these books and included among them are some the books normally found in Urban/Cultural History bibliographies. And on a final note who knew María Daniela y su sonido Lasser could be a darling for the artsy types on both sides of border? Check the Ipod at the exhibit and you’ll know, talk about a conversation between youth subcultures in the Mexican Diaspora!

Chivas USA
This is the season...ok quizá no sea esta la temporada, ni la próxima pero las Chivas USA, mi equipo de pambol local por antonomasia comienza su temporada en la MLS y allá voy a andar entonando unos cantitos que me aprendí ahora que estuve en Guanantos viendo a mis gloriosas Chivas ganándole a quien se le pusiera enfrente. Por cierto entre sus filas está su nuevo refuerzo nadie más y nadie menos que ¡Huiqui! Oh wait, no ese were Hiuqui del Cruz Azul, es el suizo Raphael Wicky. Nevermind, that’s my problem with Chivas USA, cada temporada tiene menos mexicanos, digo ya se que se llaman Chivas USA so of course it’s good to see a mix of players in the field, we have Maykel Galindo, el cubano que anota como brasileñero, pero ya van dos temporadas que no traen a un jugador mexicano ni pa’ la reserva, well then how about some Mexican-American kid to get more playing time this year?

Música, conflicto y ¡YO! en Seattle

Una de las conferencias más reconocidas entre los académicos y periodistas que escriben sobre la música contemporánea es la Pop Conference y este año este coloquio tendrá a la música latina como el tema principal de la reunión.
En especifico los académicos y críticos que se reunirán en del 10 al 13 de abril en Seattle, Washington ofrecerán sus perspectivas sobre el papel que la música ha tenido en los conflictos, cambios políticos, sociales y generacionales de EEUU y Latinoamérica. El evento coincide con la exhibición “American Sabor: Latinos in U.S. Popular Music”, una muestra que detalla el rol de los músicos latinos en Estados Unidos y que actualmente se presenta en el Museo Experience Music Project/Science Fiction sede de la conferencia.
Louie Pérez de Los Lobos y Raúl Pacheco de Ozomatli inaugurarán la conferencia compartiendo sus visiones de la música latina en este país, además la conferencia tendrá la participación de académicos como Josh Kun, la columnista Ann Powers, el performero El Vez, la cantante de Quetzal, Martha González y representando a la escena angelina Jorge Leal, colaborador persistente de Al Borde que presentará su ponencia “Yo vivo así, it’s my reality: How rock en español started a conversation between U.S. Latino youth and their Latin American counterparts” en la cual postula que el rock en español se convirtió en un canal de dialogo entre los jóvenes mexicanos con los jóvenes inmigrantes mexicanos y los México-americanos que viven en Estados Unidos.

Le comento que he todavía tengo copias de mi recopilatorio anual "Souvenires Sónicos 08" en el cual incluyo las canciones que se me han cruzado a últimas fechas entre mis andares entre Los Ángeles, San Diego, Mexicali, Guadalajara, El Llano en Llamas y Cyberia. En SS08 encontrarán cult classics como algunos tracks de Odisea Burbujas compuestos por el maestro del space pop Esquivel! Rolas de lo más granado de la escena tapatía como Gerardo Enciso, Vanilla, Elis Páprika, Armando Palomas y Troker. Por chilangoland, está Furland, los nou darling defeños, María Daniela ¡ah! la juventud en éxtasis y el papá de la chilanga banda, Jaime López. Representing por la urbe querubín tengo a Monte Negro, mis darlings de L.A. en este 2008. Los nuevos vecinos (vía Baja California) Ceci Bastida y Kobol, quienes por cierto son true Glassell Park residents. De Spain, Dover y su electro-pop galletero y en inglés (never understood that….but oh well) y si hablamos de rock galletero pues hay que incluir a The Von Bodies, c’mon, c’mon. Repping for the Turkish diaspora in the Deutschland, Digitalism y su Pogo. Els meus catalans favorits Facto delafé y las Flores Azules amb el seu radiant existencialisme.Y para rematar Los Straitjackets con un refrito del rock en español sesentero.

Después de una semana de desilusión por la decepción nacional (mexicana) al fin me llega un rayo de gozo. Mi grupo favorito (as voted by Implacable in 2007) BABASÓNICOS vuelve a Los Ángeles a tocar en el foro idóneo para ellos, The El Rey Theatre en mi boulevard predilecto Wilshire. Será una excelente ocasión para celebrar la contribución de Gabo su finado bajista y atestiguar que esta cofradía de Lanús(ciudad y ghetto) continúan promulgando la contracultura y el arte inteligente por medio de la canción pop-ular. Ya están enterados.

Estoy en un restaurante fresón llamado Locos por el Fútbol( en mall Centro Magno)que en verdad está de lujo para ver fútbol, hay una pantalla GIGANTE y como 30 plasma...claro que como es miércoles al mediodía soy el único sujeto viendo el partido...y el puñetero aleti de Madrid me tiene sufriendo va 2-2 contra el valencia al medio tiempo de los cuartos de final de la copa del rey...y no se ve por donde! por la diferencia de goles El atlético tiene que anotar dos goles para ganar, se me complicado y en este 2008 el aleti de "vasco" me decepciona.
A las 8 p.m. me voy al juego de Atlas-La Paz en el estadio Jalisco. Si es un miércoles pambolero to the max...y ¿qué?

-While Chivas is like the Catholic religion in Guadalajara. that is that while everybody seems to be a nominal Catholic and Chivas supporter, their regular games are not well attended, just like the ordinary Sunday Catholic masses, however "big" games such as clasicos and playoff aare played in front of the full stadium, something similar to the Catholic "big" Sundays and masses. On the other hand, Atlas supporters seem like a rabid cultish -younger- bunch, very influenced by the south American “barras bravas”. Somehow there are Argie-Mexi alliances, while Chivas fans wear River Plate regalia, Atlas peeps support Racing or Velez, my assumption that they do so because, Racing and Velez team have the “Academia” Moniker in common with Atlas.

-El viernes 25 de enero sucedio algo inusual: los tres equipos de fútbol de Guadalajara jugando la misma tarde en la ciudad. Fue un festin panbolero que comenzo a las 6 de la tarde en el estadio tres de Marzo de los Tecos de la UaG. Los Tecos son el equipo más desangelado de la liga mexicana. Su estadio fue tomado por aficionados de las Chivas y hasta los vendedores ambulantes parecian haber emigrado del estadio Jalisco, casa de las Chivas. El partido en si estuvo soso, Tecos empato primero y se defendio, Omar Bravo de Chivas falló un penal y al final el irregula Santana le salvo los muebles a Chivas. Jorge Vergara fue coreado....con su nuevo apodo "Huicho" en alusión a Huicho Dominguez como lo apodo el Tuca. En el centro de la ciudad, Atlas venció sin problemas al Veracruz para regocio de su hinchada.

Quick ponderings about Guadalajara

-First time in my life that I have been screamed at for being a greñudo. The most ironic part is that I was waiting for the bus to go cut my hair! So I figured it was time to do it.

-The Tapatio middle class has an on-going European fascination, which I believe has been strengthen by two factors: The rise of the European Union as a economic & cultural bloc and the distain for the U.S. in the aftermath of 9/11. Both of these factors coupled with the eternal economic dependence to the U.S. economy. Therefore, the Mexican middle class aspires to travel to Europe (no visa required) rather than Los Angeles, New York or Miami (which requires a complicated and costly Visa process) which in the 70s and 80s were the cities to visit.
*Cars like Fiat, Seat, Renault, Peugeot populate the streets, however traffic is unbearable at rush hour. Euros are being preferred over the dollar at the exchange houses. However, this is a mirage, Jalisco’s economy is very much tied to the dollar in the form of “remesas” or money sent back home by the immigrants working in the U.S. (Jalisco is one of the states that sends the most people to the U.S.)
-Private schools boast fancy names like Inglaterra, Munich, Madrid. “Because we own the world” is the slogan of the Colegio Inglaterra and my junior high has a mural that reads “La Francophonie dans le monde”.
-My cousins take French and German but not English classes.
-Stickers with the European Flags or Seals abound in the cars. Spain is the favorite but Germany comes in a close second and then France and Italy. I even saw a SUV with an Albanian plate, Albania! I guess, the owner can say muster “hey! at least it’s Europe”...
-I’m being challenged to broaden my U.S.-Mexico. Spanish-English comparison model.
-The art film houses offer European movies, however most movie theater chains offer the usual Hollywood fare.
-Driving a car is still a symbol of social status, however traffic is unbearable.
-There are tactic clues of the immigration exodus in the public life of Guadalajara: women that carry Bank of America cards, residents continually ferrying out their relatives that live in the U.S. giving them tours of the local landmarks and the malls.
-Phone cards are sold everywhere. Stores that advertise you can obtain “remesas” money. -People talking about the Mexicans living “en el otro lado” as “the other” Mexicans.
-The nucleus of the tapatio social life is the mall; there are countless malls in Guadalajara.

I have arrived to the conclusion that I will never be able to reclaim or recapture a place in this city and society. This is a futile or late effort in my life. While this could be obvious to others, this is my realization now. Perhaps, I'm also afraid and unwilling to throw myself in it too.

While this realization might sound disheartening, it empowers me to take off my booster outfit and look at this city and society objectively. I don't dislike Guadalajara, actually I find it quite amusing but I don't believe I belong here. Perhaps I never did but the whole concept of "being rooted out" lingers.

This is the first time I come back to Guadalajara so often, so I did not have time to miss it or get any nostalgia, actually it is quite surreal being here again.

I'm at an upscale café, the one the middle class spends their afternoons in, I'm in my (still) favorite area in Guadalajara, Chapultepec. I'm hearing church bells, the church seems like an overwhelming presence everywhere in this city, but this might be an appreciation coming from my preconceived notions. I think and resent the influence of the church in Guadalajara. Ivonne's(My cousin) father in law passed away yesterday, so I had to make a visit to the funerary home. It was sad and depressing. There was hard any people there. I began to imagine my father's funeral and I wonder, will there be a lot of people? I hope so, for the sake of his ego, he,he. Tío Manuel mentioned that the dead suegro was a "good person, I did like him.... but he was a dissident, he thought he was too smart and would always have erroneous ideas about religion, we never agreed", Catholics here are so egregious, I'm always hesitant to talk about religion, I don't see the point but it annoys me that they think they have the supreme truth. I am a feeble human and I can't pretend to know everything, so why do they think they know it all?

But anyhow, I called Sandra, my ex-South Gate friend, the one that got tired of living in the legal grey zone in the U.S. and returned to Guadalajara. We talked for about two hours on the phone for only three pesos! She's my age, got married, bought a house (in the suburbs) and has a child now. While she is not your typical tapatia, she seems happy with her Mexburban life, but she stills sounds fun. She likes soccer and eating out, I don't know when I will get to hang out with her since she lives en la extraradio (that's how the Spanish call the exurbs)

I ate a “torito” today at San Juan de Dios. It’s like burrito but with cilantro and cebolla inside and with cheese on top. The catch? The chesse is grated inside an oven, when the torito comes out, it is bathed on salsa…

Lucha de gigantes...inalambricos

Bueno pues hoy he tenido una muy mala suerte con los “hot spots” todo por que no quiero sucumbir a ir al Starbucks, pero por algo las empresas norteamericanas son exitosas y es que son eficientes. He visitado tres lugares y en ningún me pude conectar! Grr!

Al fin encontré uno, pero me conecta y me tira a cada rato... así aquí va unas anotaciones rápidas de mis nuevas andanzas tapatías.1/21/08

-En Chapultepec vi la muestra de fotografía al aire libre, se llama “American Fandango” tiene una historia interesante, pero me imagine otro cosa.

-El ver el dolor de la perdida por la muerte de alguien querido es jodido y me entristece. Claro que me puse a pensar en la mortalidad de mis padres. Espero que ese evento no sea tan traumático para los (as) míos(as) y que por lo menos vayan más personas a su sepelio.

-Hablé con mi amigocha Sandra por casi dos horas, ella me recomendo los Toritos en el Mercado San Juan de dios.

-Los Toritos, son unos burritos con carne, frijoles, cilantro cebolla, salsa entomatada y queso gratinado. Sabrosos y muy calientes por dentro también.

-En el Mercado corona me tome una Cerveza…de raíz sabor grosella ;)

-Sobre Sandra, OH se me olvido decirle que frecuentemente uso su termino de parties yarderos en VIVO, el programa que escribo.

-Camine por plaza tapatía, vi al chicharito Hernández de las Chivas con su familia.

-En la mañana vi a Chepo de la Torre, el ex-DT de Chivas es su BMW negro entrando al drive-thru del Starbucks, La Minerva. Dos soccerstar sightings en un día!

-me gusta mucho el concepto de restaurants/cafés en las antiguas casonas.

-Se aplazo el viaje a Zacatecas hasta la próxima semana, buh!

-A través de los años, me he creado una mitología hacia los símbolos de la UdG. Veo al león negro o el escudo y me emociona mucho. Y no tengo nada más que ese sentimiento instintivo ya que no se si la educación que ofrece es buena.

-He escuchado la canción “Lucha de gigantes” cuatro veces hoy! Vaya pesadilla…
